Description
Akeboshi is the stage name of Yoshio Akeboshi, a Japanese singer, songwriter, and musician born on July 1, 1978, in Yokohama, Japan. He began his formal music training at the age of three, learning classical piano, and by thirteen, he was already active in a band. After graduating from high school in 1999, he moved to Liverpool, England, to study at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). His time in the United Kingdom, where he was exposed to a vibrant and diverse music scene, would have a lasting and significant influence on his artistic style.

Akeboshi first gained widespread recognition for his song Wind, which was used as the first ending theme for the globally popular anime series Naruto. The track originally appeared on his independently released debut mini-album, Stoned Town, which came out on August 8, 2002. Wind is noted for its unconventional 5/8 time signature, a characteristic that set it apart from mainstream J-pop and drew considerable attention at the time. The success of the song helped the independently released Stoned Town reach number 31 on the Oricon charts and sell over 100,000 copies.

Following the success of Stoned Town, he released two more independent mini-albums, White reply in 2003 and Faerie punks in 2004. After completing his studies and returning to Japan, Akeboshi signed with Epic Records Japan. His major-label debut was a self-titled album, Akeboshi, released on June 22, 2005, which compiled and re-recorded tracks from his earlier independent works.

He continued his association with Naruto when his song Yellow Moon was selected as the series thirteenth ending theme. The track was the title piece on his mini-album Yellow Moon, released on April 19, 2006. The lyrics for Yellow Moon were written by renowned Japanese singer-songwriter Yosui Inoue.

Akeboshi’s musical identity is deeply rooted in folk music, particularly the traditional music of Ireland, which he incorporates alongside elements of electronica and jazz. His songs are often built around his skills on piano and guitar, and his compositions frequently feature complex time signatures. This distinctive fusion was shaped by his interactions with other musicians during his time in Liverpool. His 2007 full-length album, Meet Along the Way, was recorded on location in the UK and Ireland and prominently features traditional Irish instruments such as the fiddle, bodhrán, accordion, and tin whistle, with contributions from several Irish folk musicians.

Beyond his solo work and anime contributions, Akeboshi has also worked as a composer and arranger for other artists. Before his own major debut, he was involved in the production of songs for actress and singer Takako Matsu. He composed and arranged music for her single Toki no Fune in 2004, which became a top-five hit on the Oricon charts. He also provided musical compositions for artist Tsuji Ayano and singer Yo Hitoto.

Throughout his career, Akeboshi has released music on several labels, including Epic Records Japan and later RoofTop Owl. His discography includes the full-length albums Akeboshi (2005), Meet Along the Way (2007), and Roundabout (2008), a collection album, as well as numerous mini-albums and singles such as Rusty lance (2005) and Colorful Drops (2007). He continued to release music into the 2010s with the album After the rain clouds go in 2014 and the mini-album A Little Boy in 2019.
