Description
Kuroneko Chelsea is a Japanese rock band known for its connection to anime works, most notably providing the ending theme song for the long-running series Gintama. The band was formed in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in March 2007. Its original and longest-serving lineup consisted of vocalist Watanabe Daichi, guitarist Sawa Ryuji, bassist Miyata Gaku, and drummer Okamoto Keisuke. After a period of inactivity beginning in October 2018, the band restarted activities in 2024 under the modified name Kuroneko Chelsea, with a new lineup featuring only Watanabe and Sawa, supported by session musicians.
Kuroneko Chelsea made its major debut in May 2010 with the mini-album Neko Pack on the Sony Music Associated Records label. The band's first full-fledged single, Anagura, was released on November 2, 2011. This track is their most prominent anime-related work, as it was used as the nineteenth ending theme for the television Tokyo anime Gintama, airing during episodes 228 through 240. The single was released with a B-side track, Matatabi, and a live medley, with a limited edition including a DVD of a concert performance. The lyrics for Anagura were written by Watanabe Daichi, with composition by Sawa Ryuji and arrangement by the band itself.
The band secured another major anime theme song credit in 2016 with the single Ao no Lullaby, released on June 1 of that year. This song was used as the ending theme for the long-running anime Naruto Shippuden, specifically for episodes 455 through 466. The lyrics for Ao no Lullaby were written by Watanabe Daichi, while the music was composed by drummer Okamoto Keisuke.
Throughout its career, Kuroneko Chelsea released a steady stream of music, including three full-length studio albums: NUDE+ in 2011, HARENTIC ZOO in 2012, and LIFE IS A MIRACLE in 2017, along with several mini-albums and a best-of compilation titled Cans Of Freak Hits in 2014. The band was known for its energetic live performances and toured extensively in Japan, sometimes sharing the stage with other rock acts like the band OKAMOTO'S. Musically, Kuroneko Chelsea is identified with a J-rock and J-pop sound, characterized by Watanabe's distinct vocal style and lyrical approach. The band's songwriting was a collaborative effort, with lyrics almost exclusively penned by Watanabe and music composed by various members, including Sawa, Okamoto, and Miyata at different times.
After a hiatus of several years, the band announced its revival in May 2024. Founding members Miyata and Okamoto departed, leaving Watanabe and Sawa to continue as Kuroneko Chelsea. Their first release under the new name was the digital single Kiraazu on May 29, 2024.
