Description
Slapstick is a Japanese band that was active between 1977 and 1986 before reuniting in 2007. The group is notable as an early example of a musical unit composed of popular voice actors, and it is recognized as a forerunner of the voice actor band phenomenon. The members included Toshio Furukawa on guitar, Tooru Furuya on drums, Yuuji Mitsuya on keyboard, Akio Nojima on guitar and bass, and Kazuyuki Sogabe on guitar, with Hirotaka Suzuoki later joining on keyboard. Akira Kamiya was also involved as a bassist before leaving the group prior to its official debut, subsequently taking on the role of sub-producer.

The band performed theme songs for several anime series and specials in the early 1980s. Their most directly documented credit is for the television special Nodoka Mori no Dobutsu Daisakusen from 1980, for which they performed the opening theme Happy Mambo and the ending theme Oyasumi Good Night. Additional anime song credits include Cook Robin Ondo and Kagayake! Tamanegi Butai for the television series Patalliro! (1982-1983), Hoshizora no Message for Shin Taketori Monogatari: 1000-nen Joou (1981-1982), and Guutara Man Huck for Tom Sawyer no Bouken (1980). The band was associated with the Pony Canyon record label.

Musically, Slapstick was distinguished by the fact that its members were established voice actors who performed their own instrumentation and vocals at a professional level. Kazuyuki Sogabe, in particular, composed music for the group. Despite the challenges of coordinating schedules among busy actors, the band achieved significant popularity, and their concerts were known to be well-attended. The group ceased activities in 1986, and after the deaths of members Kazuyuki Sogabe and Hirotaka Suzuoki in 2006, surviving members reunited in 2007 for a memorial concert. The band's discography includes a 12-CD box set and a live DVD released in 2006, which has since become a collectible item.
