Description
Earphones is a Japanese voice actor music unit formed in 2015, consisting of three members: Marika Kouno, Rie Takahashi, and Yuki Nagaku. The group originated from the four-panel manga Sore ga Seiyuu, written by Masumi Asano under the pen name Masumi Asano and illustrated by Kenjiro Hata. In the story, the three main characters form a fictional voice actor unit named Earphones. When the manga was adapted into a television anime in 2015, the actual voice actors for those characters—Kouno, Takahashi, and Nagaku—formed a real-world counterpart of the unit. The group is signed to the EVIL LINE RECORDS label, a sub-label of King Records.
The group made its artist debut on June 18, 2015, with the single Miminonakae. This was followed by the release of the second single, Sore ga Seiyuu, on July 22, 2015, which served as the opening theme song for the Sore ga Seiyuu anime. The B-side of this single, Anata no Omimi ni Plugin, was used as the anime's ending theme. A third single, Hikari no Saki e, was released on September 30, 2015, as an insert song for the same series. Earphones released its first full-length album, MIRACLE MYSTERY TOUR, in November 2015.
The group has contributed theme songs to several anime works. In addition to their work on Sore ga Seiyuu, Earphones performed the opening theme song Ikkengakuji Goyōjin for the 2017 television anime AKIBA'S TRIP -THE ANIMATION-. The song was written by Saeki Tanoe, with composition and arrangement by Masaru Yokoyama. The group is also credited for the song Sankei Tōsen for the same anime.
Earphones has released multiple albums and EPs. Their second album, Some Dreams, was released in March 2018. The third album, Theory of evolution, was released in July 2020, featuring experimental, poetry-reading style tracks that highlight the members' voices as voice actors. In September 2021, the group released the concept EP identity, which included a remake of their debut opening theme titled Sore ga Seiyuu 2021, with new lyrics written by Masumi Asano based on interviews with the three members. Their fourth album, Tegami, was released in February 2024.
Throughout their career, Earphones has maintained recurring collaborations with Masumi Asano, who has written lyrics for many of their songs, including the original Sore ga Seiyuu, the 2021 version, and other tracks. The group has also worked with composers and producers such as the musical collective Gesshoku Kaigi and Koji Miura of the band □□□. In 2016, Earphones performed at the Animelo Summer Live event. The group continues to release music and perform live, celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2025 with the release of the CD and Blu-ray Kakaekirenai Hanataba o.
