Description
Masayuki Yamamoto is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and composer whose career is closely tied to anime music, particularly the theme songs of Tatsunoko Productions' Time Bokan series and other animated works from the 1970s through the 1990s. He is known for writing and composing nearly all of his own material, often performing as a vocalist alongside a chorus group known as Pink Piggys (also credited as Pink Piggies).
The group Pink Piggys served as a recurring chorus and backing vocal unit for Yamamoto. Specific members have included Tomoko Kawakami, Tomoko Takayanagi, Hiroko Takemasa, Yumiko Shigeta, and Miki Nakao. Their harmonies are a distinctive element of many of his recordings.
Yamamoto's most significant contribution to anime is his work within the Time Bokan series franchise. He is credited with the song Sora Kara Buta ga Futte Kuru for the series Yattodetaman. His connection to Yatterman, a central entry in the franchise, is particularly strong. He wrote the original opening theme Yatterman no Uta, which was performed by the Shonen Shojo Gasshodan Mizuumi. Decades later, a new version titled Yatterman no Uta `93 was recorded by Pink Piggys and released on a 2008 single. The same single also includes the song Tensai Doronbo performed by George Yanami. For the entry Heisei Time Bokan, Yamamoto performed the opening theme Heisei Time Bokan no Uta as a duet with Pink Piggys.
Beyond the Time Bokan franchise, Yamamoto's music appears in other anime productions. His song Jinsei no Kusarigama is used as an insert song for the television anime Karakuri Kengouden Musashi Lord. He also created image songs for various media projects. The album MASAYUKI YAMAMOTO '89 includes the track Uchuuichi no Sucharaka Otoko, an image song for the publication Mirai Hourou Galdeen, and Binbo no Yoake, an image song for the OVA Namakemono ga Miteta.
Throughout his career, Yamamoto has worked with a consistent group of arrangers, including Kohei Tanaka, Ikuro Fujiwara, and Masami Kishimura. His recorded output is extensive, with multiple original albums released between the late 1980s and mid-1990s. His second original album, MASAYUKI YAMAMOTO '89, was released in February 1989, and his eighth, Masayuki Tengoku, followed in January 1996. A best-of compilation titled The Series Best with Yoru wa Garagara Dondondon was released in December 1993. His lyrical themes often blend humor, historical references, and eccentric narratives, supported by melodic pop arrangements that reflect the period of his most active production.
