Description
ANNA TSUCHIYA inspi' NANA ~Black Stones~ is a musical project by Japanese singer Anna Tsuchiya, created specifically to contribute music to the anime adaptation of Ai Yazawas manga series Nana. This persona allowed Tsuchiya to embody the voice of the fictional punk band Black Stones, led by the character Nana Osaki, for the animes soundtrack.
The project was launched in 2006 when Tsuchiya was selected to provide the opening theme song for the Nana anime. Her third solo single, rose, was released under the name ANNA inspi NANA BLACK STONES on June 28, 2006, and became her first major success, reaching number six on the Oricon singles chart. The songs punk-influenced sound and Tsuchiyas gravelly vocal delivery were noted for capturing the aggressive yet vulnerable spirit of the anime protagonist. The B-side Lovin You was used as the theme song for the Japanese release of the film Silent Hill.
Following the success of rose, Tsuchiya continued to contribute music under the alias ANNA TSUCHIYA inspi NANA BLACK STONES. The song Kuroi Namida served as an ending theme for the anime, while Lucy was used as the third opening theme. Additional songs connected to the project include Stand By Me and Im Addicted to You.
On February 28, 2007, the self-titled album Anna Tsuchiya inspi Nana Black Stones was released on the Mad Pray Records label. The album compiles the singles and anime-related tracks, including rose, Kuroi Namada, Lucy, and Stand By Me, alongside other songs like Scream and a cover of the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK. A deluxe edition of the album included a DVD with music videos and a live street performance. The compilation album NANA BEST, released in March 2007, features songs from both Tsuchiyas Black Stones project and Olivia Lufkins project for the rival band Trapnest, serving as a comprehensive soundtrack collection for the series.
The music of ANNA TSUCHIYA inspi NANA BLACK STONES is rooted in alternative rock and pop-punk, characterized by aggressive guitar riffs and Tsuchiyas distinctive, powerful vocals. For the album, Tsuchiya worked with a notable group of session musicians, including guitarist Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit, bassist Chris Chaney, and former Guns N Roses members Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Tsuchiya wrote the lyrics for the majority of the songs, often writing under the name ANNA. The project holds significance as a direct musical extension of a popular anime and manga series, with the artist acting as a real-world counterpart to a fictional character. This collaboration contributed to the commercial success of Tsuchiyas music career and remains a defining part of her artistic identity within the context of anime soundtracks.
