A former office worker named Yuusuke Takemura loses his job when his company goes bankrupt, causing him to retreat from society and become a complete shut-in. After a week of isolating himself in his apartment, he finally ventures outside, only to be attacked by a mysterious man who bites his arm. Yuusuke manages to escape back to his room but falls severely ill with a high fever, leaving him bedridden for several days. When he finally wakes up feeling fully recovered, he steps outside to resume his normal life and discovers that the world has been utterly transformed. In the short time he was unconscious, a zombie pandemic has swept across the globe, with the undead appearing everywhere simultaneously. Civilization has collapsed, and the few remaining human survivors live in constant terror, hiding from the flesh-eating hordes. Yet Yuusuke quickly realizes something inexplicable: the zombies completely ignore him. He can walk among them freely without ever being attacked, making him the sole human immune to their aggression.
The story follows Yuusuke as he navigates this post-apocalyptic landscape, taking full advantage of his unique immunity. Rather than becoming a heroic savior, he adopts a selfish and pragmatic approach to survival, gathering supplies and living comfortably while others struggle to stay alive. His primary motivation is simply to live as he pleases in a world where he faces no personal danger from the undead. The narrative explores the moral complexities of this situation as he encounters other survivors and must decide whether to help them or continue looking out only for himself.
The main protagonist is Yuusuke Takemura, a cynical and antisocial young man who disliked people even before the apocalypse. His immunity to zombie attacks gives him enormous power in the new world order, and he is not particularly inclined to use it altruistically. Mitsuki Fujino is a young woman Yuusuke encounters early on, found hiding in a supermarket with her two younger brothers, Masaru and Takashi. Desperate for protection, she agrees to an arrangement with Yuusuke in exchange for his help surviving. Tokiko Kurose is Yuusuke's neighbor from his apartment building, who becomes infected and is confined to her room. Sayaka Makiura is a doctor who appears later in the story, serving as the deputy leader of a survivor encampment at city hall.
The setting is a contemporary Japanese city reduced to ruins by the sudden zombie outbreak. Streets are overrun with the undead, buildings stand abandoned, and the few remaining pockets of human civilization are makeshift shelters where survivors barricade themselves and live in constant fear. Yuusuke moves freely through this dangerous environment, able to scavenge for supplies without the risks that other survivors face.
The narrative unfolds through several key arcs. The story begins with Yuusuke discovering his immunity and testing its limits, establishing the rules of this new world. He then encounters Mitsuki and her brothers in a supermarket, leading to a tense arrangement where he agrees to protect them in exchange for companionship and physical favors. This arc explores the power dynamics between the immune protagonist and vulnerable survivors who have no choice but to rely on him. A significant development occurs when Yuusuke encounters a zombie wearing a skull mask that exhibits intelligent behavior, suggesting that some undead may be evolving or retaining human consciousness. Further investigation reveals that the more humans a zombie consumes, the more their thoughts and behavior begin to approximate those of living people. This discovery introduces a deeper mystery about the nature of the zombie plague. Another major arc involves a distress call heard over the radio and an attack on the supermarket by an unknown survivor, forcing Yuusuke to fight both the living and the dead. An emergency announcement directs all survivors to city hall, where rescue helicopters are supposedly arriving within three days. This sets up a journey toward what might be safety, though the protagonist's immunity makes him question whether he needs rescue at all. At the city hall survivor camp, Yuusuke meets Doctor Makiura and encounters a man claiming to be Mitsuki's boyfriend, leading to a parting of ways as Yuusuke decides to leave the group and continue his solitary existence. Throughout these arcs, the story maintains its focus on Yuusuke's selfish survivalist philosophy while gradually introducing hints about the true nature of the zombie outbreak and the possible reasons for his immunity. The narrative balances moments of dark comedy, psychological tension, and genuine horror as the protagonist exploits his unique position in a world that has ended for everyone else.
