The curse, cast by the usurper Louis, is slowly rotting the prince’s body and mind, and Will is the only one who can break it by traveling to the royal capital, Grand Trad. However, the kingdom is in turmoil after the king’s assassination, and the people are gripped by anxiety that manifests as monstrous humanoid creatures called Humans, which prey on fear and despair. Will discovers he can wield a power known as the Archetype, allowing him to channel heroic spirits and adopt various combat forms, from Seeker to Mage to Warrior. As he journeys across the warring tribal lands—from the arid plains of the Martira region to the snowy peaks of the Nord Mines—he gathers a party of outcasts and idealists: Strohl, a noble’s son seeking justice; Hulkenberg, a former royal knight burdened by past failure; and Heismay, a rogue with a dark past. Their quest becomes entangled in the kingdom’s succession tournament, where Louis manipulates the candidates and the church to install himself as the next king. Will’s party navigates political intrigue, exposing conspiracies involving the sanctified state religion and the forbidden magic of the Ancients, all while fighting Humans that grow more grotesque and intelligent. Midway, the narrative shifts when Will learns he is not merely a friend of the prince but a fragment of the prince’s soul, created as a failsafe. The real prince, dying in seclusion, asks Will to absorb his remaining essence and become the true prince, a sacrifice that forces Will to confront his own identity as a construct. After this fusion, Will leads the party in a direct assault on Louis’s flying fortress, only to discover Louis seeks to unleash a world-spanning anxiety that would turn all beings into Humans, whom he views as humanity’s purest form. In the final arc, the party rallies the disparate tribes of Euchronia, not as subjects of a king, but as allies against a common existential threat. The climax takes place in the sky-city of Eht Ria, where Will, now fully the prince yet still his own person, defeats Louis not through overwhelming force but by using the Archetype of the King to dispel the anxiety magic. He chooses to abolish the monarchy and establish a parliamentary system, leaving the throne empty and returning power to the people.
