Beschreibung
A vampire over two centuries old moves to Los Angeles to seek redemption for a horrific past. This vampire, Angel, was once known as Angelus, one of the most sadistic killers in European history. Cursed by a Romani clan whose daughter he murdered, his soul was restored, burdening him with a conscience and overwhelming guilt for every innocent life he took. In Sunnydale, he found a measure of peace in his love for the vampire slayer Buffy, but he ultimately left that city and that relationship so she could have a normal life. Now in Los Angeles, he dedicates himself to helping the helpless, fighting demonic forces while battling his own demonic nature.
Operating from a small, rundown office, Angel is soon joined by unlikely allies. Cordelia Chase, a former Sunnydale cheerleader whose acting career has stalled and whose family fortune has vanished, brings sharp wit and a head for business. Allen Francis Doyle, a half-demon messenger from the mysterious Powers That Be, suffers debilitating visions of people in danger, which he passes on to Angel to investigate. After Doyle’s heroic sacrifice, Cordelia inherits his agonizing visions and gains a profound sense of purpose. They are later joined by Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, a disgraced former Watcher who reinvents himself as a rogue demon hunter, and Charles Gunn, a streetwise vampire hunter from a tough Los Angeles neighborhood who initially distrusts all vampires but comes to respect Angel.
Their primary antagonist is the ancient, evil law firm Wolfram & Hart, a powerful organization that represents demons and dark forces, manipulating the legal system to ensure evil prevails. The firm takes a special interest in Angel, viewing his struggle for redemption as both a threat and an asset. They repeatedly attempt to corrupt him, most effectively by resurrecting his sire and former lover, Darla. This cruel manipulation pushes Angel to the brink of darkness, leading him to sever ties with his friends in a brutal crusade against the firm. A single night of despair with a newly re-sired Darla results in a miraculous and unprecedented event: Darla becomes pregnant with Angel’s child. As a vampire, the pregnancy is impossible, and Darla ultimately sacrifices her own undead existence to give birth to their son, Connor.
The arrival of Connor sets in motion a tragic chain of events. Wesley, misled by a false prophecy that Angel will kill his son, kidnaps the infant. The child is immediately stolen by Daniel Holtz, a ruthless vampire hunter from the 18th century whose family Angelus and Darla murdered. Holtz escapes with baby Connor into a hell dimension, returning years later with the boy, now a feral and angry teenager raised to hate his father. Holtz’s final revenge is an elaborate suicide framed as murder by Angel, turning Connor against his father completely. The brainwashed Connor then seals Angel in a metal coffin and sinks him to the bottom of the ocean.
The fourth season brings a series of apocalyptic threats. A mysterious, invincible Beast blots out the sun and lays waste to the city. To learn how to defeat it, Angel’s friends make the desperate choice to remove his soul, unleashing the sadistic Angelus once more. This plan backfires spectacularly when it is revealed that Cordelia has been possessed by a powerful, malevolent being named Jasmine, who was secretly manipulating the entire chain of events. Jasmine orchestrates a bloody birth from the comatose Cordelia, emerging as a beautiful woman whose very presence brings world peace by enslaving the free will of everyone who sees her. Angel and his remaining team, including a newly re-ensouled Faith, must break her hold over the city.
After these catastrophic events, Wolfram & Hart makes a shocking offer: control of their entire Los Angeles branch, handed over as a reward for destroying Jasmine. Angel accepts, hoping to fight evil from within, but only on the condition that Connor’s memories be erased and he be given a normal, happy life. In the final season, the team struggles with the moral compromises of running an evil empire. Their situation becomes even more complicated with the arrival of Spike, another vampire with a soul and Angel’s longtime rival. Initially a ghost, Spike regains his physical form, and the two souled vampires are forced to work together, their bickering masking a deep and bloody history. The team slowly realizes that Wolfram & Hart cannot be reformed; the firm is merely containing them. After a devastating loss that claims the life of a beloved team member, Angel and his surviving allies make a final stand. They destroy the Circle of the Black Thorn, the secret mortal leaders of Wolfram & Hart, knowing this act means certain death. In the series’ final scene, the team gathers in an alley, surrounded by a legion of demons, prepared to fight to the last, fulfilling Angel’s promise to always go down fighting for redemption.
