His only allies are a cynical, one-armed mechanic named Kero, who maintains the city’s failing water pumps, and a sharp-tongued former Syndicate archivist named Rina, who defects to help Mogaku decode the cryptic symbols that appear in his visions.

The first arc, The Lode, follows Mogaku as he is captured by the Syndicate and forced to map the hidden tunnels of the Basin through his visions, all while evading assassination attempts by the Chorus. This arc climaxes with a massive cave-in that reveals a sealed, ancient chamber filled with murals depicting the surface world’s destruction by a sentient, metallic storm—implying the “Above” is not a paradise but a different kind of hell. The second arc, The Hollowing, shifts focus as Mogaku and his allies go on the run, seeking refuge in the lawless outer rings of the Basin.
